LinkedIn Industry Codes: How the Industry on Your Profile Picks Your Audience

When you set an industry on your LinkedIn profile, you aren't describing yourself in your own words. You're picking one entry from Industry Codes V2, a fixed list LinkedIn maintains. Each entry has an ID, a label, a description and a parent group. Advertisers use the same list to target people by industry in Campaign Manager.

Why the code matters

Because advertisers target by these codes, the list is how LinkedIn groups members commercially. Your code puts you in a group, and the group has a parent above it.

LinkedIn hasn’t published how the industry field affects distribution. Here is what I saw. When I changed my profile industry from IT consulting to business news, my posts started reaching more business owners and founders. Nothing else about how I wrote changed.

When your field has no code

Some fields don’t have a code of their own. There is no "Customer Service" industry. The closest is "Telephone Call Centers" (ID 1931), filed under Administrative and Support Services and described as answering calls and telemarketing. For someone who writes about support operations and AI, that’s the wrong group.

If your field is missing, don’t pick the label that sounds most familiar. Pick the code whose description and parent group sit closest to the people who buy from you.

How to pick your code

  1. Open the Industry Codes V2 list and search for the words you want to be known for.
  2. Read the description, not just the label. Keep the codes whose description sounds like your work.
  3. Check each one’s parent in the hierarchy. That’s the bigger group you’ll be filed under.
  4. Set the industry on your profile, then make your headline and About section use the same vocabulary, so the signals agree.

FAQ

Can I type my own industry on LinkedIn? No. The industry field only accepts entries from LinkedIn’s Industry Codes V2 list. If your field is missing, pick the code whose description and parent group sit closest to your buyers.

Does my LinkedIn industry affect who sees my posts? LinkedIn hasn’t published that. On my own account, switching from IT consulting to business news brought more business owners and founders into my post audience, with no change in how I wrote.
