Ideal is narrow. The customer reaches one competent party with the authority to decide (AI or human), gets it solved in a single pass, and never re-explains what they already said.
Ideal is the journey that never starts, because the product, docs or pricing that caused it got fixed upstream. AI makes this trap worse. Cheap automated handling lets you run a defect forever instead of removing it.
AI lowered the cost of handling a contact, which makes it tempting to automate failure demand instead of killing it. Your job is to make the whole thing shorter and rarer, and to treat every contact as data about where the system failed.
The metric that doesn't lie is contact rate per 1,000 customers, falling over time. AI can make each contact cheaper while the reasons for contact stay flat. Rate per customer catches that. Raw volume hides it.
